Major Events of 2005

North Korea announces that it has nuclear weapons.

Over 1,000 are killed, and severe damage is caused along the U.S. Gulf Coast, as Hurricane Katrina strikes the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coastal areas. Levees protecting New Orleans give way and the city is flooded.

Pope John Paul II dies.

Tony Blair wins his 3rd successive general election in the UK.

Prince Charles marries Camilla Parker Bowles.

The last Syrian troops withdraw from Lebanon.

Egypt holds its first Presidential election.

French voters reject the proposed European Constitution in a national referendum.

Michael Jackson found not guilty in his trial on child molestation charges.

Deep Impact space probe successfully hits comet Tempel 1.

Russia and China hold their first ever joint military exercise.

Angela Merkel becomes Germany's first female chancellor.

Former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, goes on trial in Baghdad.

7/7 Terrorist attacks in London against the underground rail system and a bus.

First human face transplant is performed in Amiens, France.

Civil Partnership Act comes into effect in the UK, granting legal status to gay and lesbian couples.
