Grade 2
In
second grade, language arts skills are integrated through various types of
literature, creative writing, and the use of journals, and all students
participate in the Accelerated Reader Program. Cursive writing begins during
second semester.
The mathematics program concentrates on addition and subtraction of one-and
two-digit numbers, place value, standard and metric measurements, counting
money, telling time, geometric shapes, fractions, and multiplication and
division with and without remainders.
Social studies introduces second graders to explorers, Native Americans, wars,
laws, law making, and government. Their geographical knowledge of the United
States and of the world increases through the study of continents, oceans,
states, and mapping skills.
Earth science, physical science, and life science are all part of the second
grade curriculum. Students participate through group work, experimentation,
observation, and by making predictions, comparisons, and classifications.
Several projects completed during the school year require the use of recently
acquired research skills. The students present their projects in both oral and
written form.
Second graders enjoy physical education and have weekly classes in library,
Bible, art, music, Spanish, and Russian culture. Field trips may include visits
to Maymont Park, Swift Creek Mill Playhouse, and the Landmark Theater. Students
participate in a school-wide Christmas program, May Day activities, and a
partnership program with fourth grade called Reading Buddies. As a community
service project, the class visits Heritage Hall Nursing Home each month for
reading, crafts, songs, and games with the residents.
Kenston Forest second graders are very busy learning in a variety of ways!
